About Us

The Deniliquin Film Society is a non-profit community group run by volunteers. It is run by a small committee who are elected at our Annual General Meeting in May each year. Our key income source is membership fees and we are happy to accept donations.

We source our films commercially and from the National Film and Sound Archive. Although originally screening films only in 16mm, since 2006 we screen predominantly in DVD format.

Our aim is to screen significant films, such as classics and those that are critically acclaimed, and films that are difficult to access locally, such as foreign language films. Films are chosen by members in May each year, from a list of between 130 and 200 films compiled by the Film Society president.

Our History

The Deniliquin Film Society formed in 1994. Films were screened in a conference room of the (then) NSW Department of Agriculture building in Charlotte St. Films were screened in 16mm and were sourced predominantly from the National Film and Video Lending Service.

1n 1998, regular screenings moved to the Edward Theatre in Charlotte St, Deniliquin. We screened in 16mm from the lighting box at the back of the theatre and were occasionally visited by possums during screenings.

In 2006, a decision was made to screen more films from DVD format due to ongoing problems with the sound quality of 16mm films. As the Deniliquin Film Society didn't own its own digital projector, regular screenings moved to The Neighbourhood Centre in Trickett St, which was able to provide an in-house digital projection set-up.
